How to Calculate Required Final Exam Score

This calculator uses the weighted average formula to determine the minimum score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall grade.

Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Score × Current Weight / 100) / (Final Weight / 100)

If the required score exceeds 100%, the target grade is mathematically impossible to achieve.

Understanding Weighted Grades

Most courses split your grade across multiple components: assignments, midterms, quizzes, and a final exam. Each component has a weight (percentage) that determines how much it contributes to your overall grade. For example, if assignments are worth 30% and the midterm is worth 30%, your "current weight" would be 60%.

Strategies to Improve Your Grade

  • Focus on understanding concepts that appeared in midterms — they often reappear on finals
  • Review all homework problems and practice additional examples
  • Form study groups for collaborative learning
  • Visit your professor during office hours for targeted help
  • Use past exam papers for practice if available

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the score I need on my final?

Required Score = (Target % − Current Weighted %) ÷ Final Exam Weight × 100. For example, if you need 75% overall, have 68% from assignments (weight 60%), and the final is worth 40%: Required = (75 − 68×0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 85.5%.
