How to Use the PPF Calculator
Enter the amount you plan to invest each year (₹500 to ₹1,50,000), the current PPF interest rate and the tenure (minimum 15 years). The calculator gives you the maturity amount along with a year-by-year breakdown of your PPF growth.
What Is PPF?
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in. It offers guaranteed returns with interest compounded annually. PPF enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status — the deposit, interest and maturity amount are all tax-free.
PPF Interest Formula
PPF interest is compounded annually. Each year:
Closing Balance = (Opening Balance + Deposit) × (1 + r)
where r is the annual interest rate as a decimal. The government revises the PPF rate every quarter. The current rate is 7.1% (as of FY 2025-26).
PPF Rules & Features
- Lock-in: 15 years, extendable in blocks of 5 years.
- Deposit Limits: Minimum ₹500/year, maximum ₹1,50,000/year.
- Partial Withdrawal: Allowed from the 7th year onwards (up to 50% of balance at end of 4th year).
- Loan Against PPF: Available from the 3rd to 6th year.
- Tax Benefit: Deposit qualifies for Section 80C deduction up to ₹1,50,000/year.
PPF vs Other Investments
PPF is best for risk-free, tax-free long-term savings. For higher returns with market exposure, consider a SIP in equity mutual funds. For employer-matched savings, check your EPF balance. For pension planning, see the NPS Calculator.
