CTC vs In-Hand Salary — What's the Difference?

CTC (Cost to Company) is the total amount your employer spends on you, including employer PF contribution, gratuity, insurance, and other benefits. Your in-hand or take-home salary is what you actually receive after deductions for employee PF, professional tax, and income tax. Typically, in-hand salary is 65–75% of CTC depending on your salary structure and state.

Salary Components Explained

  • Basic Salary: Usually 40–50% of CTC. PF, gratuity, and HRA are calculated as percentages of Basic.
  • HRA: Typically 50% of Basic for metro cities, 40% for non-metro. Tax exemption available if you pay rent.
  • Special Allowance: The remaining amount after Basic, HRA, employer PF, and gratuity are allocated from CTC.
  • PF (Provident Fund): Both employee and employer contribute 12% of Basic. Employer PF is part of CTC, employee PF is deducted from salary.
  • Professional Tax: A state-level tax deducted monthly. Ranges from ₹0 (Delhi) to ₹200/month (most states) up to ₹300/month (Karnataka for higher salaries).

Professional Tax Rates by State

Professional tax varies by state and salary slab. Most states charge ₹200/month for salaries above ₹15,000. Karnataka charges ₹200/month, Maharashtra charges ₹200/month (₹300 in February), and Delhi/UP/Rajasthan do not levy professional tax. The maximum professional tax allowed by law is ₹2,500 per year.
