What is Ideal Body Weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is the estimated weight at which a person is considered healthiest based on their height and gender. Several formulas have been developed over the decades for clinical use, particularly for drug dosing and nutritional assessments.
The Four Formulas
Devine (1974): Male = 50 + 2.3 × (inches over 60) | Female = 45.5 + 2.3 × (inches over 60)
Robinson (1983): Male = 52 + 1.9 × (inches over 60) | Female = 49 + 1.7 × (inches over 60)
Miller (1983): Male = 56.2 + 1.41 × (inches over 60) | Female = 53.1 + 1.36 × (inches over 60)
Hamwi (1964): Male = 48 + 2.7 × (inches over 60) | Female = 45.4 + 2.2 × (inches over 60)
How Height is Converted
All formulas use inches internally. Your height in centimetres is converted to inches (height ÷ 2.54), and then the inches above 60 (i.e. 5 feet) are used in the calculations. These formulas are designed for adults taller than 5 feet (152.4 cm).
Limitations
Ideal weight formulas do not account for body composition, muscle mass, bone density, or ethnicity. They provide a rough reference point and should not be used as the sole indicator of health. Consult a healthcare professional for personalised advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which formula is most accurate?
No single formula is perfect. The Devine formula is most commonly used in clinical settings. We show all four so you can see the range and average.
Does height affect ideal weight?
Yes. Ideal weight formulas use height as the primary input. Taller people naturally have a higher ideal weight range.
