How to Calculate with Fractions

This calculator performs the four basic operations on fractions and simplifies the result automatically.

Fraction Operation Formulas

Addition: a/b + c/d = (a×d + c×b) / (b×d)
Subtraction: a/b − c/d = (a×d − c×b) / (b×d)
Multiplication: a/b × c/d = (a×c) / (b×d)
Division: a/b ÷ c/d = (a×d) / (b×c)

Simplifying Fractions

A fraction is simplified by dividing both the numerator and denominator by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For example, 6/8 simplifies to 3/4 because GCD(6,8) = 2.

Mixed Numbers

When the numerator is greater than the denominator (improper fraction), the result can be expressed as a mixed number. For example, 7/3 = 2⅓.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

Find the LCM of the denominators, convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with that denominator, then add the numerators. For example: 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12.
