How to Calculate Fuel Cost
The fuel cost for a trip depends on the distance, your vehicle's mileage (fuel efficiency), and the current fuel price.
Fuel Required = Distance ÷ Mileage
Trip Cost = Fuel Required × Fuel Price per Litre
Cost per km = Fuel Price ÷ Mileage
Fuel Economy in India
Fuel economy varies significantly by vehicle type. Here are typical mileage ranges for Indian vehicles:
- Small Cars (Petrol): 15–22 km/l
- Small Cars (Diesel): 18–25 km/l
- SUVs: 10–16 km/l
- Two-Wheelers: 40–70 km/l
- CNG Vehicles: 20–30 km/kg
Tips to Improve Fuel Efficiency
Maintain proper tyre pressure, avoid aggressive acceleration, use cruise control on highways, and keep your vehicle regularly serviced to maximise fuel economy.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is fuel cost calculated?
Fuel Cost = (Distance ÷ Mileage) × Fuel Price. For example, a 500 km trip in a car with 15 km/l mileage at ₹100/litre costs (500/15) × 100 = ₹3,333.
