How to Calculate Gold Value
The value of gold is determined by its weight, purity, and the current market rate for 24K gold per gram.
Weight in Grams = Weight × Conversion Factor
1 Tola = 11.6638 grams | 1 Troy Ounce = 31.1035 grams
Purity Factor = Karat ÷ 24
Gold Value = Weight (g) × Purity Factor × Rate per Gram (24K)
Understanding Gold Purity
Gold purity is measured in karats (K). 24K is pure gold (99.9%). For jewellery, 22K (91.6%) is most common in India. Lower karats like 18K and 14K are mixed with other metals for durability.
- 24K: 99.9% pure — investment bars and coins
- 22K: 91.6% pure — most Indian jewellery
- 18K: 75.0% pure — studded and designer jewellery
- 14K: 58.3% pure — durable everyday jewellery
BIS Hallmarking
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmark certifies gold purity. Since June 2021, hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery sold in India. Look for the BIS logo, purity grade, and HUID number on your jewellery.
